Most of the damage a race suit takes happens in storage rather than in the car. Folded in a holdall with boots on top of it, a suit picks up creases that never quite come out and holds whatever the rest of the bag smells of. Hung in a bag, it stays flat, stays clean and stays wearable for a lot longer.
Where it earns its keep
In the paddock it hangs on the back of an awning pole or a garage door, off the floor and out of the way, which matters when the floor is wet. At home it keeps the suit out of the airing cupboard and away from anything that might be damp. In the car it means the suit is not the thing you unpack last and iron first.
It takes overalls and mechanic’s suits as well as race suits.

A flame retardant suit loses protection if it is washed or dried carelessly, so read the label rather than treating it as ordinary clothing, and hang it rather than folding it. Those two habits do more for the life of a suit than anything else.
