Sparco 2022 Fire Extinguishers Now Available: Hand Held, Mechanical And Electrical
Safety equipment news, June 2022
Nine Sparco fire extinguishers are now on the site for 2022. They cover the three types you are likely to need: hand held bottles, mechanically operated plumbed-in systems and electrically operated plumbed-in systems.
Which one is right depends on the car and the regulations you compete under, so here is how the range splits, and what each type is for.
- Nine Sparco fire extinguishers added to the site in 2022
- Three types: hand held, mechanical and electrical
- Plumbed-in systems from a 0.9 litre single seater bottle up to 4.25 litres
- Most of the range uses AFFF, a foam based extinguishant
- The 4.25 litre mechanical system is approved to FIA Technical List 16 and by the MSA

What is on this page
Sparco hand held extinguishers
A hand held extinguisher is mounted in the cabin, within reach of the driver. The 2 litre Sparco bottle is filled with AFFF and suits events that do not ask for an FIA approved extinguisher, which includes some historic racing and track days.
AFFF is foam based, has good fire knock-down properties and is designed to be environmentally friendly. Alongside it, Sparco's 2.4 litre AFFF and 2.0kg Novec gas bottles are listed as FIA and MSA approved.

Sparco mechanical systems
A plumbed-in system has nozzles aimed at the cabin and engine bay, fed from a bottle mounted in the car. On a mechanical system it is set off by a pull cable, which can be placed within easy reach of the driver. At higher levels of motorsport these systems are compulsory in many championships, so the regulations for your class are the place to start.
The Sparco 4.25 litre mechanically activated system is for closed cockpit saloon cars. Its steel bottle is filled with AFFF, and it is approved to FIA Technical List 16 and by the MSA.
Sparco electrical systems
An electrical system does the same job, but is triggered by a switch, not a cable. The Sparco single seater electrical system is compact and light: a 0.9 litre aluminium bottle filled with AFFF, homologated for open cockpit single seaters.
For saloons, the range includes the SP-205 at 2.5 litres and the SP-305 at 3.9 litres, both approved to FIA Technical List 16, and the Sparco 8865 2.5 litre system, homologated to FIA 8865-2015.
Garreth’s advice is to read your championship’s regulations before choosing, because they set the approval, and sometimes the capacity, you need. Our guides to mechanical and electrical systems and FIA extinguisher homologations explain both.
