Stilo ST5 GTN Composite Helmet And Stand21 HANS: Our Package For Saloon And GT Racing

Helmet package, August 2021

This is the first of a run of helmet and HANS packages we are putting together this summer. Each one is a helmet and a head restraint that we have fitted together on the showroom mannequin, checked for how they sit, and photographed, so you can see exactly what you are buying.

We have started with the Stilo ST5 GTN composite, paired with the Stand21 Club Series 3. Both are in stock and ready to go out straight away.

  • Stilo ST5 GTN composite helmet with a Stand21 Club Series 3 HANS
  • Helmet approved to FIA 8859-2015 and the new Snell SA2020
  • Short sunshade as standard, made for saloon and GT cars
  • No electronics and no side ports, for a cleaner, lighter shell
  • Fitted together on our showroom mannequin before we listed it

What is in the package

A Stilo ST5 GTN composite helmet and a Stand21 Club Series 3 HANS device. Add both from the package link and the package discount comes off automatically.

The point of a package is that the two have been fitted together. The ST5 comes with quick release couplings for the HANS tethers, and we clipped the Club Series 3 on and checked the helmet sat square on the collar before we photographed it.

The Stilo ST5 GTN composite

The ST5 is Stilo’s main range, and the GTN is the composite version for drivers who do not need to pay for carbon. The G stands for the GT set up: it comes with a short sunshade as standard, which is what you want in a saloon or GT car with a roof and a screen. A full visor is available if you race something open.

The N means no electronics. There are no side ports and no fitted microphone, which saves weight and leaves the shell with a cleaner profile. The earmuffs are adjustable too: padding between the muff and the shell sets how firmly they press. It is approved to FIA 8859-2015 and Snell SA2020, the newest Snell standard. Our guide to FIA and Snell helmet standards explains what each one means.

From behind you can see how the Club Series 3 sits under the back of the ST5, with the tethers running to the couplings on each side of the shell.

Garreth's check with any helmet and HANS pair is the gap at the back. The helmet should clear the collar when you look straight ahead, and not dig in when you turn your head.

The Stand21 Club Series 3 HANS

The other half of the package is the Stand21 Club Series 3, approved to FIA 8858-2010. It is set at 20 degrees, the angle for an upright seat in a saloon, GT or rally car, and it is injection moulded from a composite, which keeps it to around 750 g with its pads and tethers.

With the ST5 GTN it makes a sensible first proper set for a saloon or GT driver: an approved helmet and an approved head restraint without spending carbon money on either.

If you are not sure of the angle or size for your seat, our guide to which HANS device you need goes through it.

Who this package suits

Anyone racing a closed car who wants an FIA and Snell approved full face helmet and a head restraint in one go, without the price of carbon. The short sunshade and the lack of electronics make it a good fit for club saloon and GT racing.

If your car has no roof, you will want the full visor, and our guide on open face or full face covers which helmet goes with which car. Size it properly first: measuring for a helmet shows how.
