Designed with direct feedback from elite pit crews in Formula 1, NASCAR, and IndyCar, the Alpinestars Radar V2 Mechanics Boots are built to deliver lasting comfort, protection, and mobility in high-pressure pit lane and service environments. Engineered for long hours on hard surfaces, these boots combine certified fire protection with durable construction and all-day support.

The robust leather upper is reinforced in key impact areas to resist wear and protect the foot during fast-paced movements, kneeling, and frequent direction changes. Inside, a fire-resistant aramidic lining meets FIA and SFI safety standards, providing essential protection in heat-exposed working conditions. An ergonomically designed mid-sole and heel counter help maintain natural foot alignment, reducing fatigue during extended shifts.

Alpinestars’ exclusive rubber compound sole offers excellent grip on smooth, oily, or polished pit floors while remaining flexible enough for comfortable walking and kneeling. Strategic perforations enhance airflow, while the low-cut rear ankle design and padded collar allow unrestricted movement and improved comfort throughout the day. A dual closure system ensures a secure, adjustable fit that stays reliable under constant motion.

Key Features:

  • Durable leather upper with reinforced heel, ankle, and toe zones.
  • Fire-resistant aramidic lining for FIA 8856-2018 and SFI 3.3 compliance.
  • Reinforced heel and toe boxes for added impact protection and stability.
  • Alpinestars exclusive high-grip rubber sole for traction on pit surfaces.
  • Perforated panels to improve airflow and temperature regulation.
  • Low rear ankle collar to enhance mobility and reduce pressure.
  • TPR ankle support system for added stability during movement.
  • Dual closure system with laces and hook-and-loop strap for a secure fit.
  • Padded collar to improve comfort around the ankle and Achilles.
  • Cushioned mid-sole and ergonomic heel counter to reduce fatigue.

Built for the demands of professional motorsport environments, the Alpinestars Radar V2 Boots deliver certified protection, dependable grip, and long-lasting comfort. They are a practical and reliable choice for co-drivers, mechanics, and pit crew members who need performance-focused footwear that works as hard as they do.

Crew and mechanics wear size guide

Pit and workshop kit is sized on the same ladders as driver kit, so if you already know your race suit or glove size you know this too. The one thing to watch is that overalls come in two systems: Sparco use letters and OMP use the numeric ladder.

Overalls

Sparco MS-4 and MS-5, and the Proban suitLetters, XS to XXL.
Letter Equivalent Chest (cm) Waist (cm)
XS 44 / 46 86 – 93 74 – 81
S 48 / 50 94 – 101 82 – 87
M 52 / 54 102 – 109 88 – 97
L 56 / 58 110 – 117 98 – 105
XL 60 / 62 118 – 125 106 – 113
XXL 64 / 66 126 – 133 114 – 121

These are the bands from Sparco’s own body size chart, which is what their letters follow. The OMP Proban race suit is also sold S to XXL and uses the same pattern.

OMP Summer and Blast EvoNumeric, 44 to 64. The same ladder as OMP race suits.
Size Chest (cm) Waist (cm) Height (cm)
44 87 – 91 71 – 75 155 – 165
46 91 – 95 75 – 79 158 – 170
48 95 – 99 79 – 83 165 – 175
50 99 – 103 83 – 87 170 – 180
52 103 – 107 87 – 91 170 – 183
54 107 – 111 91 – 95 177 – 187
56 111 – 115 95 – 99 182 – 190
58 115 – 119 99 – 103 185 – 195
60 119 – 123 103 – 107 187 – 198
62 123 – 127 107 – 111 190 – 200
64 127 – 131 111 – 115 190 – 200
Mechanics overalls are meant to be roomierUnlike a race suit, you want room to crouch, reach and kneel in these all day. If you are between two sizes take the larger one, which is the opposite of the advice for a driving suit.

Gloves

Measure around your knuckles, across the widest part of the palm, leaving the thumb out.

Letter Numeric Sparco palm (cm) OMP palm (cm)
XS 8 20.5 – 21.5 20.8 – 21.5
S 9 21.5 – 22.5 21.6 – 22.3
M 10 22.5 – 23.5 22.4 – 23
L 11 23.5 – 24.5 23.1 – 23.7
XL 12 24.5 – 25 23.8 – 24.8
XXL 13 25 – 25.5 24.7 – 25.4

Sparco and OMP agree within half a centimetre throughout. A mechanics glove should be a little looser than a driving glove so you can get it on and off quickly with dirty hands, so if you are on a boundary take the larger.

Shoes

The Sparco Fast and Chrono mechanics shoes use the standard Sparco ladder. Measure heel to longest toe, standing, and work from the bigger foot.

EU UK Foot length
37 4 24.3 cm
38 5 25.0 cm
39 5.5 25.7 cm
40 6.5 26.3 cm
41 7 27.0 cm
42 8 27.7 cm
43 9 28.3 cm
44 9.5 29.0 cm
45 10.5 29.6 cm
46 11 30.3 cm
47 12 31.0 cm
48 13 31.6 cm

The Alpinestars Radar V2 mechanics shoe uses the Alpinestars ladder instead, which carries half sizes Sparco does not: UK 7 is an EU 40.5, UK 9.5 is an EU 43.5 and UK 11 is an EU 45.5. Go by the UK size on that one. It also runs up to UK 14.

Shorts

The Sparco Bermuda cargo shorts run S to XXL on the same letter bands as the overalls above, sized on your waist rather than your chest.

A note on approvals

Some of this category is FIA 8856-2018 approved and some is not. The Sparco Tide Meca and R-Meca gloves, the OMP Pro Mech gloves and the Sparco Fast and Chrono shoes carry the driver-standard approval, which matters if you are working on a refuelling stop. The Workshop EVO gloves, the cargo shorts and the MS-4 and MS-5 overalls are workshop kit. The approval is listed on every product page.

Have you written anything about this exact product?
Yes, we have covered this exact product: Alpinestars Radar V2 Shoes And ZX Evo V3 Balaclava: Same Approval, Different Jobs. That is first-hand coverage from our own builds and showroom, not brochure copy.

What size should I order?
Sizes are listed in UK and EU scales, from UK 6 | EU 39 up to UK 13 | EU 48. Race boots are cut close for pedal feel, so most drivers take their normal trainer size rather than sizing up. If you are between sizes or usually wear a wide fit, tell us and we will advise before you order.

Are they legal for competition?
These boots are homologated to FIA 8856-2018, the current FIA standard, so the label is there when scrutineers ask for it. They also carry SFI 3.3 approval for events run to American SFI rules. Where homologated boots are required, these qualify.

Why is the sole so thin?
Deliberately. A thin, flexible sole is what gives you feel for the pedals, so you brake and heel-and-toe by feedback rather than guesswork. They are driving boots first, and that is also why we suggest keeping them for the car rather than walking the paddock in them all day.

How do I look after them?
Brush dirt off dry, spot-clean with a barely damp cloth, and let them air dry away from heaters. Machine washing breaks down the construction and any fire-resistant treatment. The full routine is in our guide on caring for FIA racewear.

Do I need race boots for a track day?
Not required, but they are one of the best value upgrades for how a car feels to drive, more so than most spend on the car itself. Our track day kit guide covers what is worth having for your first sessions.
