The Alpinestars SP+ is the latest addition to their racing boot range and has been developed to offer some of the top-level features you’d expect from an expensive, top-of-the-range shoe, but at a lower price. The SP+ features a sleek, modern design, mixing high-quality suede, and leather for the upper and para-aramidic tubular lining, providing excellent comfort and also heat protection. This race boot is not what you’d usually expect from a race boot of this price, however, Alpinestars decided to create a great alternate option for those looking for a cheaper boot or perhaps have a lower budget. The SP+ is ideal for all drivers as it provides top-level features, usually only found in the more expensive racing boots, without compromising the price tag. On top of all of this, the Sp+ is FIA 8856-2018 Approved, meaning these boots can be worn for all purposes, whether it be for track days, or for more competitive reasons, such as saloon racing or rally, these boots really have it all!

The Alpinestars SP+ race boots feature a dual closure system comprising of hook and loop strap and a traditional lace system with hidden loops, resulting in a neater finish. This system of closure provides a close, comfortable, and secure fit, whilst also being quick and easy to tighten and loosen. The collar and tongue padding is comprised of nitrate rubber, allowing for a comfortable feel, and also reducing the overall weight of the boot. The use of perforations on the tongue padding, and on the lateral and medial sides of the boot provide increased breathability, which will help reduce perspiration, ultimately making the driver feel a lot more comfortable whilst using these boots. Alpinestars have opted to use a tubular lining construction in the SP+ which provides a more comfortable feel, whilst the liner is made from a heat-resistant para-aramadic material, which is excellent to have in the event of a fire. The SP+ also features the Formula one derived thin rubber sole, to allow for increased sensitivity, and the unique “tyre tread” provides optimal grip of the pedals, so you always feel in control.

Racing boot size guide

Race boots are cut far closer than a trainer, on a thin sole, so half a size makes a real difference to how the pedals feel. Start with a tape measure rather than the size you take on the high street.

Measure your foot

Two minutes with a sheet of paper gets you closer than any conversion chart.

1Stand on paper against a wallHeel touching the skirting, weight on the foot. Sitting down gives you a shorter reading than standing.

2Mark the longest toeNot always the big toe. Mark the paper, then measure heel to mark in centimetres.

3Do both feetMost people have one foot a few millimetres longer. Work from the bigger one.

4Wear the socks you will drive inNomex socks are thicker than everyday ones and they take up real room in a boot cut this close.

Foot length to size

This is the anchor. Sparco and OMP both publish foot length against their sizes and the two never disagree by more than three millimetres, so a 28.3 cm foot is an EU 43 either way.

The same UK size, five different EU numbers

Sparco, OMP, Sabelt and MOMO all run the same ladder. Alpinestars run their own, with four extra half steps (40.5, 42.5, 43.5 and 45.5) that the others do not have. From UK 7 upwards their EU numbers stop lining up.

A dash means that brand does not make that size, not that it is out of stock. Sparco and OMP go to EU 48, Alpinestars to EU 49 on the Radar V2, Sabelt to EU 48 and MOMO to EU 46 on the boots we carry.

So which number do you order by?The UK size. It is the one we have checked against each brand’s own ladder for every product on the site, and it never varies by more than half a size between them. The EU number printed on the box will not always match across brands for the same UK size, because Alpinestars carry half sizes the others do not. If you have been looking at Alpinestars’ own website, note that their UK column runs half a size above the UK convention every UK retailer uses, ours included.

How a race boot should fit

Snug, not roomy

You want your toes close to the end with no sliding at the heel. A boot with growing room moves on the pedal, and you feel it on a heel and toe downshift long before you feel it walking to the car. If you land exactly between two sizes, take the larger one and let a thicker sock take up the difference.

The sole is meant to be thin

There is no cushioning or arch support in the way a trainer has, because the whole point is feeling the pedal through the sole. A race boot that feels flat and hard standing in the showroom is doing its job. It is not a walking boot and it will not become one.

Wide feet

A knitted upper gives more than a stiff leather one. Alpinestars build the Supertech on a fully knitted upper specifically so it takes the shape of the foot, and that is the one to look at first if a leather boot has pinched you across the ball before. Tell us if width is your problem and we will point you at the right shells.

What size should I order?
Sizes are listed in UK and EU scales, from UK 6 | EU 39 up to UK 12 | EU 47. Race boots are cut close for pedal feel, so most drivers take their normal trainer size rather than sizing up. If you are between sizes or usually wear a wide fit, tell us and we will advise before you order.

Are they legal for competition?
These boots are homologated to FIA 8856-2018, the current FIA standard, so the label is there when scrutineers ask for it. Where homologated boots are required, these qualify.

Why is the sole so thin?
Deliberately. A thin, flexible sole is what gives you feel for the pedals, so you brake and heel-and-toe by feedback rather than guesswork. They are driving boots first, and that is also why we suggest keeping them for the car rather than walking the paddock in them all day.

How do I look after them?
Brush dirt off dry, spot-clean with a barely damp cloth, and let them air dry away from heaters. Machine washing breaks down the construction and any fire-resistant treatment. The full routine is in our guide on caring for FIA racewear.

Do I need race boots for a track day?
Not required, but they are one of the best value upgrades for how a car feels to drive, more so than most spend on the car itself. Our track day kit guide covers what is worth having for your first sessions.
