This is the approved layer, and that is the reason to buy it. If your regulations specify FIA underwear, these satisfy it where a pair of shorts or a cotton base layer does not, no matter what they are made of.

Why underwear matters more than people think

A race suit is rated on the whole system, not on the outer shell alone. The layer underneath adds thermal protection time in a fire and, just as importantly, keeps the suit off your skin. Direct contact is what turns heat into a burn. That is why approved underwear covers the leg to the ankle and the arm to the wrist rather than stopping short.

The Shield Tech fabric is built to breathe as well as to protect, because an approved layer you find too hot to wear is an approved layer that stays in the bag.

Sizes and fit

XS through XXL, in black or white. Take your waist and inside leg rather than working from a trouser size. Underwear is meant to fit close: too loose and it bunches under the suit, too tight and you will not want to put it on.

Pair them with a matching long sleeved top for a full approved set. Ask us and we will make sure the two match on standard as well as on size.

Do I actually need FIA underwear?
If your championship requires it, this is the layer scrutineers ask about, and it is strongly recommended under any suit regardless. These garments are homologated to FIA 8856-2018, the current FIA standard, so the label is there when scrutineers ask for it. What size should I go for?
Sizes run from XS to XXL. Underwear layers should sit close to the skin without pinching, as loose fabric wrinkles under the suit and gets uncomfortable fast. Between sizes, take the smaller one for a base layer.

How do I wash it?
Underwear layers are the one bit of racewear you should wash after every use: cool and gentle, no bleach or fabric softener, air dry. That keeps the suit itself needing far fewer washes. Full routine in our racewear care guide.
