Bermuda length sits between a boxer short and a full long john, which is the reason to choose them: they cover more of the thigh than a short does without the heat of a full length layer. On a warm day in a closed car that is a genuinely useful middle option.

The approval, and what to check

Our listing shows these as non FIA. Approved underwear has to cover the leg to the ankle, so no short or bermuda garment will satisfy a scrutineer checking for FIA 8856-2018, whatever it is made of.

Sparco’s own naming across the underwear ranges is not always consistent between a title and a part number, so if your regulations turn on this, ask us and we will confirm the exact range against Sparco’s catalogue before you order.

Take your actual waist measurement rather than your trouser size. Too loose and the fabric bunches under a suit and rubs; too tight and you will not put them on.

Is this FIA approved?
No, this is a comfort layer rather than homologated flameproof underwear, so it does not count where the regulations call for FIA 8856 underwear. It suits karting, testing, and track days. If you race under rules that require FIA underwear, look at the FIA 8856-2018 items in the range, and our guide on whether fireproof underwear is mandatory explains when it matters.

What size should I go for?
Sizes run from XS-S to XL-XXL. Underwear layers should sit close to the skin without pinching, as loose fabric wrinkles under the suit and gets uncomfortable fast. Between sizes, take the smaller one for a base layer.

How do I wash it?
Underwear layers are the one bit of racewear you should wash after every use: cool and gentle, no bleach or fabric softener, air dry. That keeps the suit itself needing far fewer washes. Full routine in our racewear care guide.
